Special Lecture: The Sesquicentennial Cornerstone, St. Mary in the Mountains Catholic Church
August 9 @ 6:00 pm
“The Sesquicentennial Cornerstone,
St. Mary in the Mountains Catholic Church”
Description: On Thursday August 9th at 6pm the Comstock Foundation is hosting a Special Lecture and Tour of St. Mary in the Mountains Catholic Church. The church will officially celebrate the 150th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone which took place on August 18th 1868 for the first of the two brick churches built by Fr. Patrick Manogue in Virginia City.
The event includes the lecture and a tour of the Church and the basement museum.
You are invited to St. Mary’s for a presentation on the early life of Fr. Manogue and what led up to the building of the present magnificent edifice that has towered over Virginia City for the last 150 years.
It will follow the history of the building as it mirrored the history of Virginia City itself;rose to its glory, rebounded from the devastating fire of 1875, and like the city, grew tired and shabby as the mines played out and the hopeful miners slowly sought riches in the newer boomtowns.
Finally after a major renovation in 2009 it again stands as a monument to Virginia City and the people who contributed so much to the history of the West.
Bio: Patrick Neylan
The presentation will be made by Patrick Neylan, curator of the St. Mary in the Mountains Museum and the Historical Society of Dayton Valley Museum in Dayton.
